Update from Nancy Smith

Creative Memories Senior Director

Here's updated news for the Computer Club..

Nancy Smith, our presenter on May 25, was kind enough to send us the latest update and specials her company is offering to our members.

“The StoryBook Software that I shared with the club (that is for making the digital photo books) is going to be ON SALE on my website for a limited time from June 14 -27th.  The software usually sells for $64.95 (which is a terrific price already when compared to Photo Shop!)  Creative Memories is having a first time ever 40% off sale on StoryBook Creator Plus Software either in a download (no shipping) or a CD version. If your members (and/or their family members are interested, this would definitely be a good time to get it.”

You can get it for that price during the June 14-27 on my website at www.mycmsite.com/nancysmith

Look under Shop Products, and Digital.  If you have any questions you can call me at (909) 628-1072

I have one workshop in my home workshop room (for traditional and digital scrapbooking) on June 18th, then am taking a break for a knee surgery I'll be having in June.  When the club resumes in the fall, I would be happy to teach a basic starting class in Sept. or October.  You can also see on my website that there are training webinars available on both Memory Manager (organizing and editing) and StoryBook Creator Plus.  Look under the HELP ZONE, and webinars and also under StoryBook Creator tab, and training links.

Here is a video link about the software... go to  www.mycmsite.com/nancysmith

and click on Digital Scrapbooking on the drop down tab on the left.  On the main page is a 10:16 minute video called "It's a Digital Life" that does a great job at showing what the software can do if you would like a refresher or to share it with a friend or family member.

Brainy Quote

From

Milton Berle

I’d rather be a could-be

“I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are.”

Adelina presented a site called Brainy Quote profiling the late Comedian Milton Berle and I have provided you with a shortened link below.

Once in the site you can see statistics about his life and career.

On the right side you will find many of his famous Quotes, including the one above.

This website makes its money by advertisements so I am warning you in advance, to be cautious, there are a lot of ads, but the service is free and you can surf on this site for a long time. There are a lot of wonderful links to be found. Have fun, but be careful. I am also providing a direct link to The Brainy Quote website.

Using sites like these are a way to exercise and expand your mind, such as the presentation last week suggested.

PROGRAM PRESENTATION

Gimha S. Gunawardna M.D.

Associated with

The Cohen Medical Center

Rancho Cucamonga

“(Dr. G)” as she is called, presented a slide show explaining the difference between normal frequent episodes of misplacing your car keys, and not being able to function and care for oneself.

She was impressed with the questions our members asked at the end of the presentation.

She said one additional way to keep your mind active is to use the Computer, and offered the following tips to Improve Your Memory.

7 Tips to Improve Your Memory

Concerned about memory loss? Take heart. There's plenty you can do to improve your memory — from staying mentally active to including physical activity in your daily routine.

Can't find your car keys? Forget what's on your grocery list? Can't remember the name of the personal trainer you liked at the gym? You're not alone. Everyone forgets things occasionally. Still, memory loss is nothing to take lightly. You can do simple things every day to improve your memory — starting today!

No. 1: Stay mentally active

Just as physical activity helps keep your body in shape, mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain in shape — and memory loss at bay. Do crossword puzzles. Read a section of the newspaper that you normally skip. Take alternate routes when driving. Learn to play a musical instrument. Volunteer at a local school or community organization.

No. 2: Socialize regularly

Social interaction helps ward off depression and stress, both of which can contribute to memory loss. Look for opportunities to get together with loved ones, friends and others — especially if you live alone. When you're invited to share a meal or attend an event, go!

No. 3: Get organized

You're more likely to forget things if your home is cluttered and your notes are in disarray. Jot down tasks, appointments and other events in a special notebook or calendar. You might even repeat each entry out loud as you write it down to help cement it in your memory. Keep to-do lists current, and check off items you've completed. Set aside a certain place for your wallet, keys and other essentials.

No. 4: Focus

Limit distractions, and don't try to do too many things at once. If you focus on the information that you're trying to remember, you'll be more likely to recall it later. It might also help to connect what you're trying to remember to a favorite song or another familiar concept.

No. 5: Eat a healthy diet

A heart-healthy diet is as good for your brain as it is for your heart. Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choose low-fat protein sources, such as lean meat, skinless poultry and fish. What you drink counts, too. Not enough water or too much alcohol can lead to confusion and memory loss.

No. 6: Include physical activity in your daily routine

Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain — which may help keep your memory sharp. Aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity a day. If you don't have time for a full workout, squeeze in a few 10-minute walks throughout the day.

No. 7: Manage chronic conditions

Follow your doctor's treatment recommendations for any chronic conditions, such as thyroid problems, high blood pressure and depression. The better you take care of yourself, the better your memory is likely to be.

When to seek help for memory loss

If you're worried about memory loss — especially if memory loss affects your ability to complete your usual daily activities — consult your doctor. He or she will likely do a physical exam, as well as check your memory and problem-solving skills. Sometimes other tests are needed as well. Treatment will depend on what's contributing to the memory loss.
